Prior to founding Industry Beans, brothers Trevor and Steve Simmons opened Northcote's Penny Farthing Espresso on High Street in 2009. Their first venture into Melbourne's specialty coffee scene, they sought to create a warm and friendly environment where specialty coffee was served alongside a food menu that blended rustic comfort with sophistication. Since then 'Penny' has become one of the Northcote's most popular brunch destinations, proudly serving the neighbourhood with Industry Beans coffee every day of the week.
The Penny Farthing kitchen, meanwhile, is well regarded for it's innovative take on brunch, being one of the first establishments to offer what is now a Melbourne standard - the Avocado Smash, served at Penny w/ house marinated feta and avocado smashed together with fresh basil and mint, on toasted sourdough with a side of chilli oil. Other favourites include the Sweet Potato Rostis (pictured above) featuring gluten free sweet potato rostis topped with smoked salmon, dukkah coated avocado, a poached egg, candied walnuts and a beetroot salad.
The barista team at Penny Farthing Espresso offer a wide range of seasonal blends and single origin coffees from Industry Beans, brewed on both espresso and filter. For those with a different kind of brew in mind, Penny is a fully licensed venue and offers a range of local and artisan wines and beers. Penny Farthing also stocks a wide range of Industry Beans coffee beans for purchase. Visit our sattelite cafe in the North and see where it all began.
