About Us

 

Over the last decade, a wave of coffee roasters across the globe, known as the Third Wave, redefined ideas about sourcing, roasting and brewing coffee. Abandoning old approaches, these pioneers saw coffee as a natural product with many possibilities, recognising that different varietals, growing conditions, processing methods and brewing techniques could each yield something distinctive to a final cup.

Inspired by this movement, two brothers in Melbourne founded Industry Beans in 2010. Driven by curiosity and a belief that the coffee roasting process offered possibilities yet to be fully explored.

Steve and Trevor Simmons set up in a tiny garage on a shoestring budget and began roasting coffee for themselves. They formed relationships with farmers and producers in key coffee growing regions around the world, and with philosophies of quality, transparency and approachability began to grow their roasting operation.

Almost eight years on and Industry Beans has established itself at the cutting edge of Melbourne’s internationally renowned specialty coffee scene. Housed in an open-planned award-winning warehouse conversion, Industry Beans is a coffee roastery, cafe and brew bar, all under one roof in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Fitzroy Roastery

Industry Beans roasts daily for its own café and a family of high-quality cafes and restaurants across Australia. Alongside three flagship blends – Fitzroy Street, Rose Street and Seasonal – each fortnight Industry Beans offers a new selection of single origin coffees roasted for espresso and filter.

The Industry Beans roasting team works tirelessly throughout the seasons to source the best specialty grade green coffee grown across the globe, from the slopes of Mount Kenya to the valleys of the Baru Volcano in Panama. With established supply chains in key coffee growing regions in Central America, Africa and Asia, Industry Beans has direct trade relationships with numerous coffee farmers, growers and estates.

Each order is small batch roasted and we creatively apply scientific methodology to the coffee roasting process, revealing the complex and distinctive qualities of each single origin coffee.

Coffee

The coffee menu features Industry Bean’s flagship Fitzroy Street blend and Seasonal Blend for milk espresso coffees, alongside rotating single origins across a range of brewing methods including Espresso, Pour Over, AeroPress, Gold Mesh, Cold Drip and Cold Brew. Each fortnight the coffee menu yields something new.

Bubble Cup

In 2016 Industry Beans created the first specialty coffee Cold Drip Bubble Cup. Combining cold brew coffee with coffee-soaked tapioca pearls and a house-made consoy (blended condensed milk and soy milk), the IB Bubble Cup has assumed a permanent position in the Industry Beans coffee offer, and draws coffee and food fans alike from around the world.

Industry beans Little Collins

In 2017 Industry Beans opened a satellite café on Little Collins Street in Melbourne CBD. This smaller footprint venue focuses on low environmental impact takeaway trade, and efficient in-house service paced for the city. Industry Bean’s Rose Street blend takes pride of place in Little Collins, alongside a curated complement of single origins available as espresso, batch brew and cold brew, and of course, the IB Bubble Cup.
