Our sugarcane decaf coffee is made using a natural decaffeination method that keeps the flavour intact—without the caffeine. Also known as the ethyl acetate process, this method uses a compound naturally derived from fermented sugarcane to gently remove caffeine from green coffee beans.

Our sugarcane decaf coffee is made using a natural decaffeination method that keeps the flavour intact—without the caffeine. Also known as the ethyl acetate process, this method uses a compound naturally derived from fermented sugarcane to gently remove caffeine from green coffee beans.

The process begins with a light steaming to open up the beans, followed by a soak in the sugarcane-derived solution that selectively bonds with caffeine. After rinsing and drying, the result is a deliciously smooth decaf coffee with all the character of its origin, and none of the bitterness often found in chemically processed decaf.

This method is not only safe and sustainable—it also produces what many consider the best decaf coffee for those who still want the full specialty experience, just without the buzz.

How should I drink this coffee?

Our decaf is delicious however you like it- black or with milk. Adding milk highlights its smooth nutty and chocolate notes, while enjoying it black brings out it's juicy apple acidity.

Should I brew decaf differently from regular coffee?

We think so! Because the decaffeination process removes some water soluble compounds, decaf can be more prone to over-extraction. To get the best results, try using a slightly higher ratio of coffee to water in your brew. Decaf also tends to produce more fines when ground, so we recommend grinding a touch coarser than you would normally.

What is sugarcane process?

First, the green coffee beans are steamed to open their pores, making it easier to remove the caffeine. Then, a naturally derived compound called ethyl acetate, sourced from fermented sugarcane, is circulated through the beans for several hours. It binds to the caffeine in the beans, which is then removed through a second round of steaming that also eliminates the ethyl acetate.

Can I make cold brew with this decaf?

Of course! Since decaf is processed and roasted a little differently to regular coffee, a few little tweaks to your recipe will help bring out its best. We recommend using the Hario Cold Brewer - it's super easy to use and is great for storing your finished brew. Here's what we recommend for a structured, sweet and vibrant cold brew. • Dose: 60g of coffee per 750ml of water • Grind: Coarse • Brew time: 12-16 hours. Using a slightly higher ratio of coffee to water and a shorter brew time balances the flavour beautifully. Give it a go!
