Claire Botsy from Feast Melbourne recently visited the Industry Beans Roastery to get our take on the growing popularity of filter coffee in Melbourne. In this interview with Industry Beans barista Gareth Sobey the two discuss the differences between the specialty coffee scene in Australia and the United States and the trend among local coffee drinkers to be more adventurous in what they order.
"Melbourne is leading the way in a well-thought approach to roasting coffee in new and exciting ways" says Gareth. "With filtered coffee, Melbourne roasters are well-regarded for exploring different flavor profiles and complexities and having a more nuanced, more thought out approach".
Asked about how Industry Beans approach filter coffee he explains that "we are excited by what we can do with a scientific approach, using our curiosity to obtain reproducible results, recording and replicating it so there’s consistency... We've always been very passionate about the possibilities offered by filter brewing and we’re very glad Melbourne has decided to get excited about it. Filtered coffee is a different approach to coffee, you can let it linger and the taste evolves, flavors open up, increasing complexity. Drinking espresso can be a quick experience."

They also serve a range of Industry Beans single origin coffees on espresso and cold drip, as well as Chocolate From Industry Beans.
Climb on board the 109 tram to get there, it stops at the front door. The cafe's atmosphere is warm and professional, serving breakfast and lunch, with an open courtyard. Housed in an old shoemaker's shop, Carolina is one of our favourite hangouts in Melbourne's inner north - a cozy coffee house and brunch hotspot by day, a chic art-deco bar by night. We're proud to announce that Carolina is now exclusively serving Industry Beans coffee! Carolina are featuring our new blend - the Rose Street Blend - on their espresso machine, a full bodied, rich espresso experience, balanced with subtle lemon brightness and a long satisfying cocoa finish. The Industry Beans Cafe and Roastery warehouse has been shortlisted for the 2014 Australian Interior Design Awards! Missing the sunshine? We've got the perfect cure for your seasonal blues: the Autumn Roast, a rich and satisfying espresso blend.
A limited release seasonal blend, the Autumn Roast features two single origin coffees: a microlot from Santa Felisa Estate, one of Guatemala’s most respected growers, blended with a bold, refined coffee bean from Wahana Estate, one of Indonesia’s most innovative and progressive estates.
We have a direct relationship with Wahana Estate and continue to be blown away by the quality of their coffee. Located in the village of Lae Mungkur near Lake Toba in the Dairi district of North Sumatra, Wahana Estate's processing mills are leading the way in the processing of specialty grade Indonesian coffee. Santa Felisa estate, meanwhile, has been owned by the Meneses family for four generations and has a fantastic reputation. Located in the high altitude region of Acatenango, Guatemala, the estate has ideal microclimatic conditions for coffee growing. This particular microlot is from the San Antonio plot within the estate, grown on trees that are around 40 years old.
The two coffees blend together for a rich espresso experience with a very full, syrupy mouthfeel, a bright lemon acidity, notes of orange and apricot, and a long dark chocolate finish. We'll be serving this delicious blend on the espresso machine at the Industry Beans warehouse until winter arrives.
Order the Autumn Roast from our online shop and we'll post it to you, freshly roasted, anywhere in Australia.
